For the second time this season, Gardner-Webb’s Autumn Owen has been tabbed as the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week.
The former Polk County standout had a stellar day last Wednesday as the Runnin’ Bulldogs split a non-conference doubleheader at Appalachian State.
Despite a game one loss, Owen hit a solo shot to center field for her first home run of the afternoon. In game two, she had more power to display at the plate.
With a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning and Kaylee Wacaster on base, Owen belted her second home run – again to center field – to put the ‘Dogs up by three runs.
Three innings later, she would homer for the second time in the game and third time on the day. This time, the freshman catcher belted a three-run shot to center field on the fourth pitch of her at-bat. Her bomb to straightaway center scored Andria Booth and Annamarie Warley and gave Gardner-Webb a 9-2 lead at the time.
In the twinbill, Owen went 4-for-6 (.667) with a single and three home runs. She had an on-base percentage of .714 and 2.167 slugging percentage. For the year, she is hitting .361 (22-for-61) with 12 extra base hits, six of which were home runs. She has batted in 20 runs and scored 19.
Owen is third on the team in batting average, but Gardner-Webb leads the Big South with a .313 average through 24 games. Hampton (.309) and USC Upstate (.305) round out the top three.
Individually, Owen leads the Big South with a .787 slugging percentage and is second in home runs, trailing USC Upstate’s Alyssa Oakes, who has hit nine in 27 games. She is tied for sixth in RBI and sits seventh in total bases.
